Google has just confirmed the dates for its annual developer conference: Google I/O 2026 will take place on May 19-20 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre, next to Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California. Free registration is already open, and it promises to be one of the year's biggest tech events.

Event Date and Format

The event kicks off at 10:00 AM Pacific Time with the main keynote. It will be a full two-day in-person conference that can also be streamed online for free.

Google promises "the latest AI breakthroughs and updates across products company-wide, from Gemini to Android and more", featuring keynotes from Google leaders, fireside chats, product demos, and technical sessions.

What We Expect: The 5 Biggest Announcements

1. New Gemini Models

AI is Google's number one priority. We expect significant updates to the Gemini family, possibly Gemini 3.5 or even Gemini 4, with improvements in reasoning, code generation, and multimodal capabilities. Google needs to respond to Alibaba's recent Qwen 3.5 launch and keep pace with OpenAI's GPT-5.2.

2. Android 17

As every year, Google will unveil the next Android version. Android 17 will likely feature deeper Gemini integration, new privacy features, and UX improvements. The developer beta should be available immediately after the event.

3. Android XR and Extended Reality

Google has been developing Android XR, its platform for extended reality devices. With the Samsung Galaxy XR in development and other XR devices on the way, I/O 2026 could be the stage for significant AR and VR breakthroughs.

4. Aluminium OS: Chrome OS Replacement?

One of the most interesting rumors is Aluminium OS, which could be the future replacement for Chrome OS on Chromebooks. If Google confirms this, it would mark a major shift in its laptop operating system strategy.

5. AI Agents and Project Astra

Google has been investing heavily in AI agents that can perform tasks on your behalf. Project Astra, its multimodal AI assistant that can see and understand the real world through your camera, will likely receive major updates.

Why Google I/O 2026 Matters More Than Ever

This year, AI competition is fiercer than ever. With Alibaba launching Qwen 3.5, OpenAI dominating with GPT-5.2, and Anthropic pushing boundaries with Claude, Google needs to prove that Gemini can compete at the highest level.

Additionally, increasing regulatory pressure in Europe and the US around generative AI means Google will likely announce new safety and transparency tools.
