Microsoft released the optional update KB5077241 on February 24 for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. With 29 changes in the changelog, this is not just a security patch — it brings new features that users have been requesting for a while.

Headline feature: built-in internet speed test

One of the most talked-about additions is a native internet speed test built right into the Windows taskbar. No more opening a browser and going to Speedtest.net or Fast.com. You can now measure your Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or cellular speed directly from the network icon in the system tray or Quick Settings panel.

It is a small but practical feature, especially for remote workers who check their connection speed as part of their daily routine.

Sysmon is now part of Windows 11

For system administrators and security professionals, this is the biggest change: System Monitor (Sysmon) is now an optional built-in feature in Windows 11. Previously it required a manual download from Sysinternals. It is now available directly through Windows Optional Features.

Sysmon logs system activity at a level of detail that standard Event Log cannot match: process creation, network connections, registry changes, driver loads. It is a fundamental tool for threat detection and forensic analysis.

Critical BitLocker fix

The update resolves an important bug: some devices were freezing after entering the BitLocker recovery key. If you have experienced issues with disk encryption in Windows 11, this patch fixes it.

More changes included

  • Emoji 16.0: new emojis available in the emoji panel (Win + .)
  • RSAT for ARM64: Remote Server Administration Tools now work on ARM64 devices including Copilot+ PCs
  • Backup and restore improvements: first sign-in restore now supports more device types including Microsoft Entra hybrid joined and Cloud PCs
  • File Explorer: open a new instance by holding Shift or middle-clicking the taskbar icon
  • Sleep resume improvements: faster wake times and improved stability

How to install KB5077241

Since this is an optional preview update, it does not install automatically. To get it:

  1. Go to Settings > Windows Update
  2. Click Check for updates
  3. If it appears as an optional update, click Download and install

For manual installation, search for KB5077241 in the Microsoft Update Catalog and download the .msu file directly.

Which version of Windows 11 do you need

This update applies to Windows 11 version 24H2 (build 26100) and version 25H2 (build 26200). If you are on an older version like 23H2, the update will not appear. In that case, upgrading to 24H2 first is recommended.

Next Patch Tuesday is March 10

KB5077241 is a preview update, meaning its fixes will be pushed automatically with the March 2026 Patch Tuesday. Install it manually now if you want the improvements today, or wait and it will arrive on its own next month.
