Firefox 148 adds kill switch to disable ALL AI features

Mozilla just made a bold statement. Firefox 148, launching on February 24, 2026, will include a master toggle called "Block AI enhancements" that lets users disable absolutely all artificial intelligence features in the browser with a single click. It's the first time a major browser has offered such radical control over its AI features.

What exactly the AI kill switch disables

The "Block AI enhancements" toggle in Firefox 148 completely disables the following features:

  • Chatbot sidebar: The integration with Claude (Anthropic), ChatGPT (OpenAI), Copilot (Microsoft), and Gemini (Google) that lets you query AI assistants directly from the browser
  • Smart tab grouping: The feature that uses AI to automatically organize open tabs into thematic groups
  • Link previews: The feature that generates automatic summaries of link content before clicking, using language models
  • Alt text in PDFs: The automatic generation of image descriptions within PDF documents using computer vision
  • Smart search suggestions: AI-based search recommendations that analyze browsing context

How to enable it

The toggle is in Settings > Privacy & Security > AI Enhancements. It's off by default, meaning AI features will be active unless the user decides to block them. Mozilla considered enabling it by default but decided it was better to leave the choice to the user.

Why Mozilla made this decision

The inclusion of this kill switch is a direct response to massive user backlash against AI integration in browsers. In recent months:

  • October 2025: Mozilla announced the chatbot sidebar with Claude and ChatGPT. Over 15,000 users left negative reviews on extension stores
  • November 2025: The AI tab grouping feature caused performance issues on low-RAM machines. Users reported Firefox consuming up to 2GB additional memory
  • January 2026: The link preview feature generated controversy because it sent URLs to external servers to generate summaries, which privacy-focused users considered unacceptable
  • February 2026: A Change.org petition asking for "Firefox without AI" collected 250,000 signatures

Firefox vs Chrome vs Edge: who respects your AI choice most

Each browser's stance on AI features is very different:

Firefox 148

  • Global kill switch for ALL AI
  • Granular per-feature control
  • AI features fully disableable
  • No AI telemetry when blocked

Google Chrome

  • Gemini integrated with no global disable option
  • AI in address bar enabled by default
  • AI tab organization not disableable
  • AI usage telemetry always active

Microsoft Edge

  • Copilot permanently integrated in sidebar
  • Can be minimized but not fully disabled
  • Bing AI inseparable from search
  • Microsoft collects Copilot interaction data

The battle for the "AI-free" browser

Firefox is not alone in this movement. There's growing demand for browsers that prioritize simplicity and privacy over AI features:

  • Zen Browser: Firefox fork that defines itself as "AI-free" from its inception
  • Ladybird: Browser in development that promises to be completely independent of AI engines
  • Brave: Offers its own Leo chatbot but allows complete disabling
  • Vivaldi: Has publicly stated it won't integrate invasive AI

What this means for the future of browsers

Mozilla's decision reflects an important trend: users don't want AI integrated into everything without their consent. There's a crucial difference between "AI as an optional tool" and "AI as a forced feature".

Chrome and Edge have chosen the second path. Firefox, with this kill switch, gives users the power to choose. It's a move that could define the next phase of the browser wars.

What you can do

  • Update Firefox on February 24 when version 148 launches
  • Go to Settings > Privacy > AI Enhancements and decide which features you want active
  • If you prefer zero AI: Enable the "Block AI enhancements" toggle and you're done
  • If you like some features: You can disable only the ones you don't want, one by one
  • Spread the word: Many users don't know they can have total control over AI in their browser

In a world where every app wants to add AI, Firefox gives you the off button. Use it or not, but the option exists. And that's what matters.
