YouTube, the world's largest video platform, suffered a massive outage on February 17, 2026, leaving over 470,000 users unable to access the service. The issue affected both the website and mobile app, as well as YouTube Music and YouTube TV.

What happened to YouTube

Reports began piling up during the afternoon (Pacific Time), as thousands of users tried to access the platform only to be met with black screens, "Something went wrong" error messages, and videos that wouldn't load or froze mid-playback.

According to Downdetector data, reports escalated rapidly:

  • 390,000 reports at 5:24 PM PT
  • 470,000+ reports just 6 minutes later
  • YouTube TV had over 10,000 additional reports

Which YouTube services were affected

The outage wasn't limited to the main platform. YouTube's three major services all experienced problems:

  • YouTube (web & app): Videos not loading, empty home page, login errors
  • YouTube Music: Playback interrupted, songs not loading
  • YouTube TV: Live streams cut off, unable to access content

Social media reaction

The hashtag #YouTubeDown quickly became a trending topic on X (formerly Twitter), with users worldwide reporting the same issue. Many initially thought it was their own internet connection before realizing it was a global outage.

Typical comments included: "Is YouTube down for anyone else or is it my wifi?" and "I thought it was my internet but I see that's not the case."

YouTube's official response

Google, YouTube's parent company, acknowledged the problem through its official support page:

"We're aware that some of you are experiencing issues watching videos on YouTube, YouTube Music, or YouTube TV. We're investigating the issue and will update this thread with the latest info."

YouTube later confirmed that service was restored across all platforms, though the exact cause of the failure was not disclosed.

How to check if YouTube is down

If you experience YouTube issues in the future, you can verify the service status at:

  • Downdetector: Shows real-time user reports
  • X (Twitter): Search for the #YouTubeDown hashtag
  • Google Status Page: Status.google.com

What to do when YouTube goes down

While you can't restore the service yourself, you can take some steps:

  • Check your connection: Try other websites first
  • Don't clear cache or reinstall: The problem isn't on your device
  • Wait 15-30 minutes: YouTube outages are usually resolved quickly
  • Use alternatives: Twitch, TikTok, or Vimeo while service is restored
