Discord to require ID or face scan: users flee to Stoat

Discord just dropped a bombshell on its community of 200 million monthly active users. The platform announced that starting in March 2026, all accounts will be treated as minors by default. To unlock features like unrestricted direct messages, access to NSFW channels, live streaming, and unlimited server participation, users will need to verify their age through government ID or facial scanning.

The reaction has been immediate and massive. Searches for "Discord alternatives" surged 10,000% on Google within the first 48 hours of the announcement. And an open-source platform called Stoat (formerly known as Revolt) is bearing the brunt of this exodus.

What changes Discord will implement in March

According to Discord's official statement, the changes include:

  • Accounts treated as minors by default: All new and existing users who don't verify their age will be automatically restricted
  • Verification methods: Government-issued ID (passport, national ID, driver's license) or biometric facial scan
  • Features restricted without verification: Limited DMs, no access to 18+ channels, no streaming, server limits
  • Data processing: Discord claims biometric data is processed by a third party and deleted after verification

Why Discord made this decision

Discord faces increasing regulatory pressure. In the United States, the updated COPPA 2.0 (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) requires robust age verification. In the European Union, the Digital Services Act imposes fines of up to 6% of global revenue for failing to protect minors. Australia passed a law in 2025 that bans social media for children under 16.

Discord chose the most aggressive path: instead of verifying only those accessing adult content, it treats everyone as a minor until proven otherwise.

Stoat: the alternative crashing under demand

Stoat, formerly known as Revolt, is an open-source, decentralized, privacy-focused communication platform. It was born as a Discord clone but with a radically different philosophy: no tracking, no data sales, no mandatory identity verification.

What Stoat offers

  • Open source: Anyone can audit the code, modify it, or run their own instance
  • No telemetry: Does not collect behavioral data or sell it to advertisers
  • Self-hosting: Communities can run their own servers with full control over their data
  • Familiar interface: Design similar to Discord, making the transition easier
  • No biometric verification: Does not require identity documents or facial scanning
  • E2E encryption: End-to-end encrypted direct messages (Discord doesn't offer this)

The problem: Stoat's servers can't keep up

Stoat reported that in the last 72 hours it received more registrations than in all of 2025 combined. Main servers have experienced intermittent outages, slow loading times, and account creation errors. The team, which is significantly smaller than Discord's, is working to scale their infrastructure.

Other Discord alternatives that are growing

Stoat is not the only option. Other platforms are also seeing increased registrations:

  • Matrix/Element: Decentralized protocol with E2E encryption, used by European governments
  • Guilded: Roblox's gaming-focused platform, no biometric requirements
  • TeamSpeak: The classic voice service, now with modernized chat
  • Mumble: Open-source, lightweight, ideal for gaming communities

How this affects you as a Discord user

If you use Discord regularly, here are the scenarios:

  • If you verify your age: Your experience stays the same, but Discord will have a copy of your ID (or processed biometric data)
  • If you don't verify: You'll lose access to most features that make Discord useful
  • If you migrate to Stoat or another alternative: You'll need to convince your community to do the same

What you can do now

  • Create a Stoat account (stoat.chat) as a backup plan, before traffic makes it impossible
  • Export your Discord data: Go to Settings > Privacy > Request all my data
  • Talk to your community: Discuss as a group whether to migrate or stay
  • Evaluate Matrix/Element if privacy is your top priority
  • Don't panic: The changes take effect in March, there's still time to decide

Discord's decision marks a turning point in how social platforms handle identity verification. The question is whether users will accept handing over their biometric data to keep using a chat service, or whether they will seek alternatives that better respect their privacy.
